The Australian Gold Nugget is the only legal tender and pure gold bullion coin that changes its design annually. The new design is first used on the proof coins, and this design is then used for striking the bullion coins the succeeding year. For example the reverse design of the proof issue in 2004 was that of a Kangaroo in front of a grass tree. This then became the design of the bullion coin in 2005. The reverse design of the proof issue in 2003 was that of a hopping kangaroo, which was then used as the design for bullion coins released the following year.
